The primary lesson that I have learned from my journey through recovery is to live in the day, yesterday is gone, tomorrow is a promissory note. So, if all that we have is the day that we are in, then we have less guilt over what went wrong in the past and less anxiety over the future. In our present tense, we think more about the task in front of us.
Hopefully, we have accepted the irreversible fact that we need some help. Maybe a lot of help. When we realize that we need help to get sober or clean and have decided to reach out; the next steps are to not only take it a day at a time but boil down (with the help of our professionals and peers), exactly where to start.
Physical help-Many of us do not have the first clue the extent of the damage we've done to our bodies. If you don't have a primary care physician, go get one. Today. The doctor will most likely make suggestions to us if his exam produces results that positive or negative. Here's the first hurdle; we have to be honest. Tell your primary care doc that you are making a run at sobriety. This will enable the doctor to make clear suggestions to you about aiding in your journey. The doctor can draw on their considerable network of recovery professionals for your specific needs.
It's up to you to do the footwork here. Be involved with your own recovery. Not around the edges. Whether it is Self-Help 12 step programs or appointments with Mental Health professionals, Specialists, do what the pros tell you. Today!
